A panellist asks a candidate, as small talk, whether she plans to have children. Nobody on the panel stops it. In fiscal year 2025 the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) received 88,201 neue Diskriminierungsanzeigen, about the same as the year before, and one careless question is easy to turn into one of them.

Interview training for hiring managers is how you prevent that moment. This post gives 11 ready-made courses, in 3 groups, with what each fixes and how to roll them out. Each group ends with an Unsere Wahl. The legal points describe US federal rules, so use this as a syllabus, not a ruling.

Lawful and structured hiring

Legal hiring, interviewing & pay transparency

The EEOC says it is illegal to discriminate against a job applicant because of race, colour, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. This course covers lawful interview questions, plus pay transparency rules where they apply. Every interviewer needs it, because the panel member speaks for the employer. Run a scenario: show five interview questions and ask the room which ones to rephrase.

Inclusive hiring: structured interviews

Structured interviews reduce bias and give panels evidence they can defend. The course covers one question set per role, a shared scoring guide and notes written straight after each interview. Hiring managers need it because unplanned chats reward the candidate who feels most familiar. The interactive moment is a rating exercise: everyone scores the same sample answer, then compares scores and discusses the gap.

Writing inclusive job ads: a line-by-line workshop

Job ads set who applies. The EEOC says it is illegal to publish a job advertisement that shows a preference for, or discourages someone from applying because of, a protected characteristic, and gives "recent college graduates" as an example. This 30-minute workshop goes line by line and removes exclusionary wording. In a Word Cloud round, people name phrases they would cut.

AI in hiring and people decisions: fair, lawful and human-led

Managers who use AI to screen or rank candidates must stay fair, lawful and human-led. The EEOC says the laws it enforces prohibit neutral policies and practices with a disproportionately negative effect on protected groups if they are not job-related and necessary (for age 40 and over, if they are not based on a reasonable factor other than age). That page does not mention AI, so ask your lawyer how it applies. The scenario: an AI shortlist drops everyone with a career gap. What does the manager do?

Our pick: Legal hiring, interviewing & pay transparency. It stops the costly mistake at its source, the question asked in the room, and every other course in this post builds on it.

Fair treatment of every candidate

Citizenship, immigration status & fair I-9 practices (US)

The Department of Justice says federal law prohibits citizenship status discrimination in hiring and unfair documentary practices during employment eligibility verification, generally Form I-9 and E-Verify. Hiring managers should not ask for specific documents or favour one kind because of a person's citizenship; ask HR what applies. A quiz works well: which documents may a new hire choose to show? Ask it before and after the session.

Veterans & reservists in the workplace (US)

Managers should take care not to penalise veterans or reservists for service obligations. The Department of Labor says the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) requires returning service members to be promptly re-employed in the position they would have attained, with the same seniority, status and pay. The page we read does not cover hiring, so ask HR what applies. Poll the room on one gap-year scenario.

Onboarding colleagues from abroad

The course helps managers welcome hires from abroad with the right onboarding steps and expectations. Hiring does not end at the offer, and a manager who explains the first week clearly keeps the new colleague from feeling unsure. It covers paperwork, local norms and who to ask. In an Open Ended round, people write the one thing they wish someone had told them in their first week.

Our pick: Citizenship, immigration status & fair I-9 practices (US). It is the group's clearest legal line, and managers often get it wrong with good intentions.

Ethics, respect and conduct

Code of Conduct

This course gives hiring managers one clear standard for gifts, honesty, conflicts and speaking up. They need it because candidates, agencies and suppliers all try to influence the people who decide. Scenario: a recruiter sends a manager gift vouchers after a successful placement. Learners vote on what to do, then see the policy answer.

Respectful workplace & anti-bullying

The course sets the respectful-behaviour standard and shows hiring managers how to deal with bullying early. Interview panels have a power gap, and a sharp comment to a nervous candidate or a junior panellist sets the tone. It includes a Pick Answer quiz that sorts banter from bullying, with a short discussion of where the line sits for your team.

Preventing retaliation

The EEOC says it is unlawful to retaliate against applicants or employees for filing or being a witness in a discrimination complaint, or for communicating with a manager about discrimination. This course stops hiring managers punishing anyone who raises a concern. Scenario: a panellist reports a colleague's question. How should the lead respond?

Resilience, stress and wellbeing at work

Hiring peaks bring back-to-back interviews, tight deadlines and pressure to fill roles fast, which is when shortcuts happen. This course helps hiring managers manage stress and stay resilient when workload peaks. It covers spotting early warning signs, protecting thinking time between interviews and asking for help. A Rating Scale poll asks how stretched people feel this month, then sets a small action for each.

Our pick: Code of conduct. It gives every interviewer one shared standard for the pressures of hiring, and it is the course people remember in a real moment.

How to roll the plan out

Start with the four courses marked Yes in the table, because they carry the legal risk. In fiscal year 2025 the EEOC received 88,201 neue Diskriminierungsanzeigen, about the same as the year before, so a short, early session is cheap by comparison.

  1. Before the first interview: Legal hiring, structured interviews and retaliation. Together they take about two hours.
  2. Within the first quarter: the fair-treatment courses and the code of conduct.
  3. Jedes Jahr: a refresher quiz on the Yes courses, plus the AI course whenever your tools change.
  4. Role-specific depth: job ads for anyone who writes them, onboarding for anyone who hires from abroad.

Add your state or country rules where you hire. Ask HR or a lawyer what applies.

Ways to run these courses on AhaSlides

You can build any of these as a self-paced course with the AhaSlides course creator, run them as a live Q&A deck, or both, with a pre and post survey to measure what changed.

  1. Antwort auswählen: show five interview questions and ask which one to rephrase, or which documents a new hire may choose to show for I-9 purposes.
  2. Wortwolke: ask "Which phrase would you cut from this job ad?" The biggest words show what to fix first.
  3. Bewertungsskala: before and after the structured interviews course, ask "How confident are you running an interview without improvising?" from 1 to 5.
  4. Offenes Ende: collect anonymous questions for HR on retaliation scenarios, so people ask what they would otherwise keep to themselves.

FAQ

What training do hiring managers need?

Hiring managers need lawful interview questions, bias awareness, structured interviewing and the rules on pay transparency. After that, add fair-treatment, job-ad and conduct courses like the ones above.

What can you not ask in an interview?

Avoid questions that could show a protected characteristic, and ask only job-related ones. The EEOC says pre-employment information should be limited to what is essential for deciding whether a person is qualified, that employers are explicitly prohibited from pre-offer inquiries about disability, and that questions that may indicate race, sex, national origin, age, religion or disability should generally be avoided. Ask HR or a lawyer about your own rules.

Is interview training mandatory?

Not in the federal sources cited in this post, which set rules for hiring but do not require a course. Many employers still run one to reduce the risk of claims. Check your own state's rules.

How long does hiring manager training take?

The three courses to take before a first interview run to about two hours, based on the lengths in the table above. All 11 courses add up to about seven hours, so spread them over a quarter.
