Seven ways to play, 20 ready-made rebus and emoji puzzles with answers, plus how to run the whole thing live so nobody has to mark paper.
A guess the picture game needs almost no setup. You show an image, or part of one, and people work out what it is. It turns up at office parties, school lessons, family Christmases and Halloween nights alike. Below are the seven versions, then a short guide to running them on phones, and some tips for keeping the room engaged.
Pictures are a good bet for a game because we remember them well. In a 2008 paper in PNAS, Brady and colleagues showed people 2,500 objects over five and a half hours. When each old object was then paired with a new one, viewers picked the one they had seen about 92 per cent of the time if the new one was a different kind of object, 88 per cent if it was a similar object from the same category, and 87 per cent if it was the same object in a different pose. Chance was 50 per cent.
Why picture games work
The research shows people hold on to a surprising amount of visual detail, which is part of why a picture round feels fair: players really have seen what they are guessing. The moment of recognition is quick, everyone can have a go, and the reveal lands well. Difficulty is easy to adjust by choosing how much of the image to show.
What is a guess the picture game?
A guess the picture game asks players to work out what an image shows. A well-known cousin is Pictionary, where you draw the clue yourself. These seven versions need no drawing at all.
| Pomysł | Jak to się gra | Najlepszy dla |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Hidden picture | Tiles come off one at a time until someone names the image | A slow reveal with a clear winner |
| 2. Zoomed-in picture | A tight close-up of an everyday object | Openers and mixed ages |
| 3. Rebus puzzles | Pictures spell out a word or phrase | Rounds that get harder as you go |
| 4. Baby photos | Guess who is in each childhood photo | Teams who do not know each other well |
| 5. Brand logos | Name the brand from a logo with its name removed | Easy starters you can make harder |
| 6. Emoji Pictionary | Emoji spell out a film, song or landmark | Themed nights such as Disney or Christmas |
| 7. Album covers | Name the album and band from a bare cover | Fani muzyki |
Idea 1: Hidden picture
You start with a large image covered by small tiles. Players ask for tiles to be flipped one at a time and try to name the whole picture. Whoever guesses with the fewest tiles revealed wins.
You can build one in PowerPoint. For a live room, cover the picture with shapes on a slide and delete them one by one as you go.

Show a close-up of a small part of an object and let players guess what it is. Crop tightly enough that the whole subject is hidden, but not so tightly that the image blurs into abstract colour. Everyday objects work best: a zip, a pineapple's skin, the keys of a piano, the stitching on a football.
Start with easy zooms and pull back only when nobody has it. It is a good opener because it takes ten seconds to explain.

Użyj tego szablonuIdea 3: Rebus puzzles
A rebus uses images to spell out a word or phrase. A picture of a bee next to a picture of a leaf reads "belief". Rounds can be themed around proverbs, film titles or song names, and difficulty is easy to tier: single words in round one, whole sayings by round three.
Give each puzzle a time limit. The faster a player gets it right, the more they should score, which is where a timed quiz slide helps.

Nasz wybór: butterfly (number 2). It gets a groan, then a laugh, which is the sound you want from a rebus round.

Ask everyone to send in a photo of themselves as a child before the event, ideally between the ages of one and ten. Show them one at a time and have the group guess who is who. The laughter comes from the people, so it suits teams who do not know each other well. Always ask permission before showing anyone's photo.

Show logos with the name removed and ask players to name the brand. A starter list of twenty easy ones: BMW, Google, Apple, Adobe, McDonald's, Nike, Lacoste, Nestlé, Pringles, Android, Vodafone, Spotify, Audi, Shell, X (formerly Twitter), PayPal, Michelin, HSBC, Pepsi, Kodak.
Logos are trademarked, so source them yourself and use them only in your own quiz. Make the round harder by cropping to just the shape, or by showing a logo in the wrong colours.

Emoji Pictionary swaps drawing for symbols. Pick a theme and "spell" the answer with emoji. A lion and a crown is Król Lew. A snowflake and a princess is Mrożony. Themes such as Disney films, Christmas songs or famous landmarks all work.
Test each clue on a colleague first. An emoji puzzle that is obvious to its author is often impossible for everyone else.

This one rewards a good musical memory. Show a cover with the artist and title removed, and players name the album and the band. Pink Floyd's Ciemna strona księżyca (1973), with its prism on black, is a classic. Radio X has a ready-made album cover quiz if you want to see how it plays out.

Nasz wybór: the zoomed-in picture (idea 2). It takes ten seconds to explain, needs only a few close-up photos, and works for most ages.
If your room prefers to listen rather than look, try a zgadnij piosenkę round next, or the zgadnij film questions for more film-based clues.

Paper answer sheets slow everything down and someone has to mark them. A live version means players see the picture on the big screen, answer on their phones and the points sort themselves. Match the AhaSlides slide type to the idea:
- Wybierz odpowiedź for hidden tiles, zoomed-in pictures, logos and album covers. Add your picture to the slide, type two to four options, mark the right one and set a timer. Turn on the setting that gives faster answers more points, and quick correct answers score higher.
- Chmura słów as an alternative for the zoomed-in round, when you want open guesses instead of options. Everyone types what they think it is, and the most common guess grows biggest on screen.
- Otwarty for rebus puzzles, emoji puzzles and baby photos, where players type a name or phrase and you reveal who got it.
Players join with a code or QR code on their phones, so a remote guest and someone in the room can play the same round.

Two settings lift a picture quiz. A Baner slide between rounds shows who is in front, which is what keeps a competitive room switched on. Tryb drużynowy (on the Edu Medium, Edu Large, Pro and Enterprise plans) groups players so that a table or a breakout room plays together, which suits office parties and classrooms where you would rather have collaboration than a dozen individual scores. For a longer worked example with ready-made questions, see our pick image quiz guide.
Tips for a picture game that lands
- Keep images large and sharp. People can recognise fine visual detail (87 to 92 per cent correct in Brady's study), so let the subject set the difficulty and keep the file crisp.
- Warm up with an easy one. One or two gentle openers bring everyone in before the hard images arrive.
- Mix themes. Logos, food, landmarks and childhood photos all reward different people, so a mixed round gives everyone a moment.
- Cap each round at eight to ten images. More than that and the pace drops.
- Reveal with a pause. A beat before the answer gets a better reaction than reading down a list.
- Check your image rights. Use your own photos, stock libraries you have a licence for, or images you have permission to show.
