Christmas is celebrated on 25 December. For Christians it marks the birth of Jesus, and the date was already being observed in Rome by the fourth century. Many Orthodox churches follow the Julian calendar and celebrate on 7 January instead. Around the world the day is also enjoyed as a family and cultural holiday, whatever people believe.
Many familiar traditions are more recent than people expect. The decorated Christmas tree grew out of German customs in the 1500s, and the first commercial Christmas card was printed in London in 1843. Food and customs differ widely, from roast dinners in the UK and the US to festive feasts in Asia, Latin America and Africa.
