About Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving in the United States falls on the fourth Thursday of November. The tradition looks back to the harvest feast shared in 1621 by the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people in Plymouth, which many people call the first Thanksgiving. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanks in 1863, and Congress fixed the date as the fourth Thursday in 1941.

Today the day is about food, family and friends. Turkey is the classic main dish, with sides such as stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie to finish. Many families watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which began in 1924, or settle in for an afternoon of American football.

Canada has its own Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October. A quiz is an easy way to bring a table, a classroom or a remote team together around the holiday, whether you are in the US or joining from elsewhere.
