About Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day is on 14 February. It is named after a Christian martyr called Valentine, and the link with romance is usually traced to medieval poetry, including a poem by Geoffrey Chaucer written in the late 1300s that connects the day with birds choosing their mates.

Today it is a day for cards, flowers, chocolate and dinner dates in many countries, and it is also a day to celebrate friends and family. Customs vary. In Japan it is traditional for women to give chocolate on 14 February, with men returning gifts a month later on White Day, 14 March. In South Korea, people who did not receive a gift gather on Black Day, 14 April, to eat black bean noodles.

A Valentine's quiz works well for friends, couples and teams. The templates here mix romance trivia, movies and traditions, and some are light discussion activities.

Hosting tips

  • Keep the tone warm and inclusive. Valentine's Day is for friends and family as well as couples.
  • Start with a quick poll about how people plan to spend the day to get everyone talking.
  • Use the movie and tradition rounds for mixed groups, and the chocolate rounds for something lighter.
  • Playing at work? Pick a template that is built for a team and avoid questions about personal relationships.
  • Offer a sweet prize for the winner, such as a box of chocolates to share.
