About Festivals & traditions

Festivals and traditions are how people mark the year and make a household feel like home. They include harvest festivals such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, Chuseok and Thanksgiving, holy days from many faiths, family customs passed down the generations, and playful days such as April Fools' Day on 1 April.

Many of these dates move. Lunar festivals and religious holy days change every year, and autumn begins at a different time in each hemisphere. A quiz is a friendly way to learn about the customs your neighbours, colleagues and relatives keep, and it works best when it stays curious and respectful.

The templates here cover April Fools' Day trivia, religious holidays, family traditions and autumn festivals around the world. They are meant to build understanding and start conversations rather than to test belief.

Hosting tips

  • Say at the start that the aim is to learn about each other, and that no one has to share their own beliefs.
  • Invite people who keep a custom to add to the answers in their own words.
  • Check the date of each festival for the year you are playing, because many follow lunar calendars.
  • Describe practices as traditions of a community, and avoid ranking one faith or custom above another.
  • For the April Fools' quiz, tell the group the quiz itself is genuine, and keep the pranks friendly.
  • Offer a small prize, a seasonal treat or a turn to choose the next activity as the winner's reward.
