About New Year's Eve & New Year

New Year's Day falls on 1 January in the Gregorian calendar, which Pope Gregory XIII introduced in 1582 and which most of the world now uses for civil life. The evening before, New Year's Eve, is a night for looking back at the year and making plans for the next one.

Traditions differ a great deal from place to place. In Scotland the night is called Hogmanay. In Spain many people eat twelve grapes at midnight, one for each chime of the clock. In Japan, Buddhist temples ring their bells 108 times as the year ends. In New York, a ball has been dropped over Times Square at midnight since 1907.

At work, the weeks around the new year are a natural time for a team to look back, celebrate wins and set goals together. A short live quiz or a few polls make that easier than a slide deck, and everyone can join from their phone.

Hosting tips

  • Open with a quick poll or word cloud, such as one word for the year, before you move on to scored questions.
  • Mix a few light quiz rounds with the discussion templates so quieter team members get a turn too.
  • For a global team, ask people to share how they mark the new year at home, because dates and customs vary.
  • Keep year-in-review items about your own team and work, so the content stays true after the year is over.
  • Give a small prize for the top three, or let the winner choose the next team activity.
