An "ask me anything" (AMA) round, or an "ask me a question" Story, only works if the questions are good. Instagram has 3 billion monthly users (Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, September 2025), so plenty of people are ready to answer, and Instagram's Questions sticker makes it easy to open the floor on your Story: you type a prompt, place it and share it. But a prompt that only says "ask me anything" gives people nothing to react to, so you tend to get a few replies and then quiet. Open with a sharp, specific question instead and the same sticker becomes a conversation.
Below are 100 ask me anything questions, sorted by where you are using them: an Instagram Story, a DM thread, an in-person (IRL) catch-up or a room full of people waiting for someone to go first. Specific questions usually get more replies than vague ones, so each list sticks to questions that can be answered in a line or two.
How to run an AMA people join in on
- Open with a specific prompt, not a blank box. Pick one question from the lists below and put it on the sticker.
- Match the question to the audience. Use the DM openers for one person, the general and quick-fire sets for a Story, and the team set for a work session.
- Reply to the early responses first. With 3 billion monthly users, your followers see plenty of Stories, so one that is visibly being answered is easier to join.
- Share the best responses. Instagram lets you share a response to your Story without showing the person's photo or username.
Best DM questions to open an Instagram AMA
Send these to one person. Keep the first message short and specific. A compliment plus a question works far better than a flat "hi, AMA". Our pick: What's a small win from this week you haven't told anyone about? It is low-stakes and a little flattering to answer, so it invites a story instead of a one-word reply.

Run an AMA beyond the Story sticker
A single Story sticker is fine for a quick round with friends. The harder part is running an AMA that is not a Story: a webinar, a class or a team all-hands, where you need your own way to gather and answer questions live without losing track of them.
That is what a live Q&A tool is for. Guests submit questions on their own devices, named or anonymous, and you work through them on screen in real time instead of scrolling a comment section mid-conversation.

Warm the room up first with a word cloud: ask "how are you feeling right now?" and let everyone add a few words (you set the limit per person, and three is the default). The answers appear as people submit them.

Then run a quick poll to check who is in the room before the questions start, so you can pitch your answers at the right audience.

Finally, let the room steer. A second poll with the topics you can cover, such as career advice, study tips or behind the scenes, lets the audience choose what you answer first.

The free plan hosts up to 50 live participants, enough for most classes and team sessions; bigger audiences need a paid plan.

Frequently asked questions
What is Instagram's "ask me a question" feature?
It is the Questions sticker, which you add to your Instagram Story so followers can type a question for you. You see the responses in your story's viewers list and can share one to your Story without showing the person's photo or username.
What are some good random ask me anything questions?
Short, specific one-liners work best: "What's the last photo you took?", "which app do you open first in the morning?" and "describe your week in three words" all work well. Each is specific enough to answer in one line but open enough to be interesting.
How long should an AMA run for?
Around 20 to 30 minutes is a comfortable length for a live session in most rooms, though that is our suggestion rather than a fixed rule. For a Story, decide in advance when you will stop answering.
Can people ask questions anonymously?
Yes in a live AhaSlides Q&A, but not fully on Instagram. On a Story you can share a response without naming the person, but the viewers list still shows who sent it. In a live AhaSlides Q&A, you can allow anonymous or named questions.
