Escape room theme FAQs

What is the best escape room theme for kids?

Our editorial picks: pirate ship, wizard school (ages 7 or 8 and up) and Christmas workshop, none of which needs scares.

Which theme needs the least prep?

Eight themes need one background and plain-text clues: haunted manor, pirate ship, ancient temple, space station, detective agency, Halloween house, Christmas workshop and New Year's Eve countdown.

Should I run it on paper, in a form or on a live slide?

Paper and props suit one group in one room, a Google Form suits self-paced play, and a live slide suits a group playing together on phones.

How many rooms should an escape room have?

Three give a simple difficulty curve: a quick first room, a harder middle and a final lock. Use two for young children or a short session.

How to turn a theme into an escape room

Choose one theme, give players a goal and a deadline, map three clue answers to a final code, then run it once with someone who did not write it. For more group games, see online team-building games, scavenger hunt ideas and short team-building activities.
